01. Overview
Investigative work that follows counsel’s strategy.
Litigation often turns on details that are not yet in the file: a witness who has moved, a party’s history that hasn’t been examined, or activity that doesn’t match a sworn account. TJS Private Investigations provides litigation support to help attorneys develop those facts while there is still time to use them.
We work at the direction of counsel. You define the questions, set the priorities, and decide how findings are used. Our role is to gather information lawfully, document it carefully, and report it accurately, including facts that don’t help your position.
Matters where attorneys commonly request litigation support:
- Researching the background of parties and opposing witnesses
- Locating witnesses who have moved or are hard to reach
- Documenting a party’s observable activity in public settings
- Developing facts in personal injury and insurance defense matters
- Supporting family law cases involving custody or support questions
- Checking claimed history against available records
- Preparing for depositions, mediation, or trial
TJS is an investigative firm, not a law firm. We do not give legal advice, and questions of strategy, privilege, and admissibility remain with counsel. Attorneys can read more about how we work with firms on our investigations for lawyers page.
02. Capabilities
Field work and research in one assignment.
Party and Witness Research
Review available court records, business affiliations, and address history to inform counsel’s assessment of a party or witness. Our background checks page explains the research in more detail.
Witness Locates
Identify current addresses and contact details so counsel can arrange interviews or service. Learn more about witness locates.
Activity Documentation
Document observable activity in public settings where a party’s conduct is relevant to the claims or defenses in the case.
Interviews at Counsel’s Request
Where counsel directs it, speak with witnesses and record what they report, noting where accounts differ.
Chronologies
Assemble documented events into a timeline so counsel can see sequence, gaps, and inconsistencies.
Organized Findings
Arrange research results, photographs, video, and notes into an indexed record that is straightforward to review.
03. Our Investigators
Disciplined work that holds up to scrutiny.
Litigation support asks for more than finding information. Each finding must be attributed to the right person, tied to a source, and described without overstatement, because opposing counsel may examine how it was obtained.
From our Houston headquarters, TJS brings more than 17 years of investigative experience and over 532 closed cases to legal assignments. We keep clear records of what we did, when, and where, and we tell counsel promptly when a lead is weak or a source is unreliable.
04. What Clients Receive
A report written for attorney review.
Deliverables are shaped around the assignment and counsel’s instructions. Depending on the scope, they may include:
- A written report organized by issue or question
- Source references for each research finding
- Photographs and video with available date and time information
- Current contact details for located witnesses, where found
- A chronology of documented events
- Investigator notes and activity logs
- A summary of open questions and unverified leads
We report what was found and how it was found. Whether material is discoverable, admissible, or useful at trial is a judgment for counsel. Findings reflect the information available during the investigation.

07. Frequently Asked Questions
Questions attorneys ask before engaging us.
1. Can a private investigator work directly for an attorney?
Yes. Many legal assignments are directed by counsel, who sets the scope and receives the findings. Discuss with your firm how the engagement should be structured.
2. Do you provide legal advice on how to use the findings?
No. TJS reports facts. Decisions about strategy, discovery, privilege, and admissibility belong to the attorney handling the case.
3. Can you find a witness who has moved?
Often, yes. We research available records to identify a current address or contact details. Results depend on the person’s recent records, and we explain what was checked if a location can’t be confirmed.
4. What if the investigator may need to testify?
Tell us at the outset if testimony is possible. We document our work with that in mind and can discuss availability as the matter develops.
5. Can you work on cases outside Texas?
TJS serves clients in 29 states and Washington, DC. Tell us where the parties and witnesses are, and see our service locations for coverage.
6. What should we send to get started?
The names and identifiers of the people involved, relevant addresses, the issues in dispute, and any dates you’re working toward. Share only what counsel considers appropriate.
